Well... decided to take a chance and won a bid on aquabid for a batch of daphnia... Think they are the big ones,, ??? much larger than any I've seen before but the two plastic bags they arrived in, were loaded with all sizes.... the lineatus and some of the larger fish loves the adults... found that if I took a typical mesh net, and strained some of the smaller ones through the mesh, then the majority of the rest of my killies could eat the smaller ones..
I set up two different places for the remainder, (really most of em, as I only fed a very small portion of what I got) I have one black pail, with old tank water siphoned off several of my established tanks and have a small fluo lite on top (timed with my other lights).
the other half went into a bucket that has been growing for a while on it's own,,, it went through several looks, I suppose bacteria at first, then cleared up a bit, then cloudy again, maybe rotifers?? then cleared up, so I figured this one was well aged and had plenty of weird little foods for the daphnia. No light on this one, as it gets some residual lighting from the aquarium nearby... going to see how this works out... might have to move one of the buckets to another part of the basement where the temps are a little cooler..
will give you all an update as I see how these two cultures are progressing..
Oh.. was going to throw in a bit of spirulina powder from time to time unless someone tells me that isn't a good idea....
any thoughts?>???

I had them outside and they seemed to do fine on watermelon rind <for some odd reason the red part does not decompose> and eaten apple cores. I tried yeast but since you can't see them eat it, you are hoping they do. Although filter feeders, I am not sure what they are doing when they cover the apple core for hours on end.

Doug:
My take on the watermelon, is rind only... for some reason they don't eat the colored fleshy part... also, I have purchased some spirulina powder, and put some in from time to time... I have one bucket (about 5 gal.) black, and near a block wall in my basement, but think they would do better a little cooler than where I have them... also... Everyone has told me they are fussy about wanting "used" tank water, ie.... siphoning off what you are for water changes... I have never lost them in that sort of water, but.... on the other hand, I have always used them up before I got a good enough culture going...
good luck...

I keep them inside and out. I have only had success with the largest which I think are magna. Used tank water works for me. The first few batches I tried dechlor or aged dechlor and killed several starter cultures. I use a dry yeast/algae powder that I get from Sachs Systems Aquaculture. He also sells many kinds of daphnia, algae and other items.
